On Tuesday, Macy’s revealed four pilot sites of its new off-price brand, Macy’s Backstage. They appear to have plans to launch the stores with impressive new office fitouts and just the best salespeople. This autumn, the New York stores will sell apparel and household products for 20–80% discount, comparable to Nordstrom Rack and TJMaxx.
“We think we can give a whole new level of value to clients who respect fashion and love to look for a deal,” said Macy’s chief innovation and business development officer Peter Sachse.
Even when the recession is over, people still look for deals. Macy’s is wooing price-conscious buyers with an off-price idea.
MOBILE SHOPPING
Free Wi-Fi at Backstage shops will allow consumers to compare costs online. Stores are adding Wi-Fi, but it’s not yet mainstream.
Macy’s should encourage customers to compare costs, particularly because it promises 20–80% off original pricing. Smartphones let customers find the greatest deals.
Macy’s hasn’t shown how it would use mobile for Backstage other than Wi-Fi, but it has said it will.
“It will be a dynamic shopping experience backed by appealing marketing, both conventional and mobile,” said Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief innovation and business development officer, describing Back stage’s initial four shops.

Macy’s brand mission is to surprise and excite consumers with new goods. Macy’s may alert consumers about new products through mobile. Texting, social networking, and shopping apps can do this.
